This bill allows members of the West Virginia retirement system to use their accumulated, unused sick leave days to gain additional credited service towards their retirement, a change that applies to those who became members after June 27, 1988. Previously, there was a restriction for individuals who joined the retirement system on or after July 1, 2015, preventing them from using these accrued days for additional service credit, but this bill removes that restriction. The system will grant two workdays of retirement credit for every one day of accrued sick leave, with 20 workdays counting as a full month of credit, and any remaining days that amount to 10 or more will also count as a full month, while fewer than 10 remaining days will not be counted. This credited service will not be considered to violate the rule of not exceeding 12 months of credited service within any given year.
