This bill amends the Parental Rights in Social Media Act by expanding the types of damages that can be recovered in civil actions against social media companies. Specifically, it clarifies that "actual damages" for minors or their parents aggrieved by violations of the act can include, but are not limited to, damages for injury, self-harm, addiction, sexual exploitation, or other harms to a minor. Furthermore, the bill defines a "social media platform" as a product for the purpose of bringing a product liability action, which is a lawsuit seeking damages for harm caused by a defective or dangerous product, as defined in section 25-21,180 of the Revised Statutes. This change aims to provide more avenues for recourse and compensation for harms experienced by minors on social media platforms.
