This bill, known as "Quinton's Law," amends Tennessee law regarding the time limits, or statutes of limitations, for filing lawsuits. Specifically, it changes the rules for wrongful death lawsuits, generally allowing them to be filed within two years of when the cause of action arose, but extending this to three years if criminal charges are brought against someone accused of causing the death, and if that criminal prosecution is initiated by a law enforcement officer, district attorney general, or grand jury within the initial two-year period. The bill also clarifies that lawsuits for libel, personal injuries (other than wrongful death), false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, breach of marriage promise, civil rights violations, and statutory penalties must be filed within one year of the cause of action accruing. These changes apply to any legal claims that arise on or after July 1, 2026.
