This bill, the Mississippi Medical Education Pipeline and Readiness Act, aims to address physician shortages and healthcare disparities in Mississippi by creating a structured pathway for students interested in medical careers, starting as early as the 9th grade. The program, jointly managed by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), and the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), will establish uniform standards for students pursuing medical education, from high school through college, with the goal of increasing the number of Mississippi students admitted to medical school, improving workforce diversity, and strengthening the state's healthcare system. The MDE will identify participating high schools and develop a pre-medical curriculum, while IHL will set undergraduate readiness benchmarks and provide academic support, and UMMC will offer early exposure opportunities and mentorship. A Mississippi Medical Pipeline Advisory Council will oversee the program's implementation, and all three agencies will jointly report annually on student participation and outcomes, with the act taking effect on July 1, 2026.
