This bill amends existing Nebraska law to prohibit bringing certain weapons and prohibited substances into the State Capitol, defining "prohibited substance" as explosives, incendiary devices, hazardous materials, or paint, and "weapon" as a firearm or a knife with a blade over three and a half inches that can cause serious harm. While generally barring these items, the bill creates exceptions for individuals with prior approval from the Nebraska State Patrol, law enforcement officers on duty, qualified retired law enforcement officers, and individuals holding a valid concealed handgun permit, allowing them to carry concealed handguns in the State Capitol under specific conditions. The bill also assigns the Nebraska State Patrol the duty to implement procedures to secure the State Capitol and detect prohibited items by January 1, 2027, and repeals the original sections of law that are being amended.
