This bill, titled "Cash Payments Amendments," mandates that businesses and government entities must accept cash payments for goods, services, or fees if they also accept digital or card payments in person at a physical point of sale, which is defined as a location where a consumer makes a payment. The bill defines "cash" as U.S. coins and currency, and clarifies that "store credit" does not include legal tender. While suppliers are generally required to accept cash, there are exceptions for transactions requiring credit card security deposits or credit card numbers for unforeseen expenses, and suppliers can still require exact change or round payments. The bill also exempts suppliers with fewer than ten employees from this requirement. The Division of Consumer Protection, within the Department of Commerce, will administer and enforce these provisions, with the authority to impose fines and seek court action. The bill also establishes a new "Government Cash Act" to ensure government entities also accept cash. This legislation is set to take effect on July 1, 2027.
