This bill proposes to prohibit the use and sale of the herbicide paraquat in the State. The bill would also define paraquat to include herbicides known as “paraquat,” “paraquat dichloride,” and “paraquat bis(methylsulfate).” The bill would authorize limited exemptions to the prohibition on the use of paraquat only when no other less harmful pesticide would be effective in addressing an environmental or agricultural emergency. These exemption orders would be valid for up to one year and H.739 would specify the paraquat to be used, the permitted uses of the paraquat, the order’s date and duration, and the order’s geographic scope.
