This bill extends the service life of conventional or Class D school buses used exclusively for transporting students from school to after-school programs, allowing them to remain in service until the later of 20 years from their initial use or 300,000 miles, an increase from the previous limit of 18 years or 200,000 miles. If a bus reaches these new limits during the school year, it can continue to be used until the end of that school year before needing to be replaced or retired, provided it remains safe and the owner notifies the department of safety in writing. Furthermore, any such bus operating beyond 15 years of service must undergo at least two inspections annually by the commissioner of safety or their representative to ensure continued safe operation.
