This bill allows fire trucks operated by municipalities, counties, or fire protection districts that have reached their standard 20-year service limit to receive a one-time extension of up to five additional years, provided they meet strict safety and operational requirements. To qualify for this extension, the fire apparatus must pass a thorough inspection by a certified professional, meet specific safety standards set by the State Fire Marshal (covering aspects like brakes, pumps, and structural integrity), and be recertified as safe for continued use each year of the extension period; importantly, a fire truck cannot have already received an extension under this new law. The State Fire Marshal will develop the necessary rules and guidelines for these inspections and certifications, in collaboration with the Mississippi Insurance Department and fire service groups. The bill clarifies that no municipality or fire protection district is obligated to extend a fire truck's service life, as the decision rests with their governing authority.
