This bill requires parents or legal guardians to store firearms in a "reasonably secure" manner, meaning using a trigger lock, a locked box, or a gun safe that requires a key, combination, or fingerprint to open, to prevent unauthorized access by a minor, defined as an individual 18 years old or younger. If a minor gains access to a firearm and unlawfully possesses it on the grounds of a public school (grades K-12, including school buses) as a direct result of this failure to store it securely, the parent or guardian is guilty of a Class A misdemeanor, a serious criminal offense. However, this law includes exceptions, such as when a minor is legally possessing a firearm under specific circumstances outlined in another section of Alabama law or when the firearm is secured within a motor vehicle parked in a school parking lot. This act is set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
