This bill expands the geographical boundaries for residency requirements for correction officers and sheriff's department personnel who are uniformed members, meaning they are part of the official uniform staff. Previously, these employees were generally required to live within the state or the specific local government they served. Now, these individuals can be hired and remain employed if they live in a county within the same state where their employing local government is located, or in a county that borders it. Furthermore, if the local government is near another state, these uniformed members can reside in a county within that bordering state, as long as their residence is less than forty-five miles from the boundary of the local government they serve. This change aims to make it easier to hire qualified individuals for these positions by offering more flexibility in where they can live.
