This bill allows local departments of social services to provide burial assistance for funeral expenses, up to $1,000, for individuals who were recipients of public assistance or state residents receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a federal program providing cash benefits to low-income individuals who are aged, blind, or disabled. This assistance is contingent on the availability of adequate funding and will only be provided if legally responsible individuals cannot cover the costs and other available benefits are insufficient. The State Board of Social Services is authorized to create regulations for this program, with the initial adoption of these regulations exempt from the usual Administrative Process Act requirements to expedite implementation.
