This bill authorizes sheriffs and their deputies in Mississippi to use radar speed detection equipment on public roads outside of municipalities, provided the county board of supervisors unanimously approves its purchase or use. The use of this equipment is to be prioritized in areas with documented speed-related crashes or fatalities, school zones, or where adjacent property owners have complained about speeding. The number of radar units a county can have is limited based on its population, ranging from one unit for counties with less than 50,000 residents to five units for those with over 110,000 residents. The bill also defines and prohibits "speed traps," which are specific sections of highway with speed limits not justified by a recent engineering study or lacking adequate signage for reduced speed limits, though this prohibition does not apply to posted school zones or certain defined local roads. Additionally, the bill brings forward a section of code related to the Driver Training Penalty Assessment Fund for potential amendment and sets an effective date of July 1, 2026.
