Bill Summary

As enacted, requires the principal or the principal's designee provide notification to the parent or legal guardian of each student who was in the classroom or instructional area at the time that a classroom evacuation occurred by the end of the day in which the classroom evacuation occurred unless the event that prompted the classroom evacuation is an ongoing emergency or is otherwise under investigation by a state or local law enforcement agency, in which case the notification must not be provided to parents and legal guardians until the emergency event is resolved or the principal or the principal's designee determines that providing the notification does not impede an ongoing investigation, as applicable. - Amends TCA Title 49.

AI Summary

This bill requires school principals or their designees to notify parents or legal guardians of students who were evacuated from a classroom due to another student's violent, aggressive, or severely disruptive behavior. A "classroom evacuation" is defined as removing students from a classroom because another student's behavior creates a safety concern or significantly disrupts instruction. This notification must occur by the end of the school day the evacuation happened, unless the incident is an ongoing emergency or under law enforcement investigation, in which case notification can be delayed. The notification must state that an evacuation occurred, briefly describe the general reason for it, and outline the safety steps taken by the school, but it cannot disclose information about the student who caused the disruption or other students if it violates privacy laws like FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Schools will also need to keep records of these evacuations and notifications, and local school boards must adopt policies to implement these requirements, with the law taking effect on July 1, 2026.
