This bill amends existing Mississippi law to expand the authority for using radar speed detection equipment. Previously, only the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol and certain municipal law enforcement officers in specific circumstances were allowed to use this equipment. This bill adds sheriffs and their deputies to the list of authorized users, permitting them to operate radar speed detection units on public roads, streets, and highways located at least 1,000 feet outside the boundaries of any municipality, village, or hamlet. The term "radar speed detection equipment" refers to devices used to measure the speed of vehicles. This change aims to provide law enforcement with more tools to enforce speed limits in unincorporated areas of counties.
