This bill modifies the rules for enforcing judgments, particularly those originating from general district courts. Specifically, for judgments entered in a general district court on or after July 1, 2026, if a debt buyer is seeking to enforce the judgment, the standard 10-year limitation period for enforcement will apply even if the judgment is docketed in a circuit court. This means that docketing a general district court judgment in a circuit court, which currently allows it to be treated like a circuit court judgment with extended enforcement possibilities, will no longer extend the enforcement period for debt buyers of these newer judgments. For judgments entered before July 1, 2026, the existing rules will continue to apply, allowing for potential extensions through circuit court docketing.
