This bill requires on-duty general or limited authority Washington peace officers to take specific actions when they encounter an individual they reasonably suspect is a federal agent conducting immigration enforcement. These actions include activating their body-worn and dash cameras if equipped, immediately reporting the encounter to their employing agency so the community can be notified according to agency policies, and documenting and reporting the encounter afterward. When documenting, officers should try to contact any reporting party, confirm the federal agent's identity by requesting official identification if safe, and avoid actions that could escalate the situation. The bill also mandates that local or state governments will protect peace officers from financial liability for any judgments or fines in civil or criminal proceedings that arise from their good-faith actions taken in compliance with these requirements while acting within their scope of employment.
