This bill amends existing law to establish more severe penalties for assaulting a law enforcement officer in the first degree, which is defined as intentionally or knowingly causing bodily injury to an officer on duty, or recklessly causing bodily injury with a dangerous instrument, or recklessly causing serious or substantial bodily injury to an officer on duty. The bill increases the minimum mandatory jail time for this offense from thirty days to six months, and for cases involving serious or substantial bodily injury, the minimum mandatory jail time will be one year without the possibility of suspension. These changes are intended to address the increasing dangers faced by law enforcement officers and to deter future assaults.
