This bill requires cardiovascular screenings for all students, not just student athletes, as part of their annual physical examinations, with the goal of detecting potential heart conditions. These screenings, to be conducted by qualified healthcare professionals, will follow nationally recognized guidelines and include reviewing personal and family medical history for signs of heart disease, as well as a physical examination to identify any concerning heart murmurs or irregular rhythms. Students with positive findings will be referred for further evaluation. The bill also mandates that the Department of Education, in partnership with the Department of Health, distribute educational materials about sudden cardiac arrest, a life-threatening condition where the heart abruptly stops beating, to students and their families, particularly those involved in athletics. Furthermore, the Department of Health is tasked with developing policies, training programs, and continuing education for healthcare providers to enhance their knowledge of cardiovascular screening guidelines and proper referral procedures for positive results. The Department of Health will also publish an annual report detailing the number of screenings performed and referrals made.
