Bill Summary

As enacted, creates a Class E felony offense when a person, for the purpose of deriving a pecuniary benefit, engages in conduct intended to influence the occurrence or nonoccurrence of an event while the person, or another acting in active concert with the person, is a party to a contract traded on a prediction-market by which the person will derive such pecuniary benefit directly from the settlement of that contract based on the occurrence or a nonoccurrence of the event. - Amends TCA Title 39.

AI Summary

This bill creates a new criminal offense in Tennessee, classifying it as a Class E felony, which is a mid-level felony offense. The new law targets individuals who intentionally try to manipulate the outcome of an event when they or someone else has a contract with a "prediction-market." A prediction-market is defined as a platform where people buy and sell contracts that are tied to the results of future events that are not yet known. The crime is committed if the person stands to gain financially, either directly or indirectly, from the event happening in a certain way. This legislation aims to prevent people from unfairly influencing the outcomes of events traded on these prediction markets for their own financial benefit.
