This bill allows medical care facilities to ask patients if they are a "service member community member," which is defined as a service member (someone in the active or reserve components of the U.S. military, NOAA, or Public Health Service), a veteran (someone who served in the U.S. military and was discharged honorably), or their spouse, child, or stepchild. If a patient is identified as a service member community member, the facility can then recognize them as a vulnerable population and follow specific health care equity standards from a report by The Joint Commission, a healthcare accreditation organization, to ensure they receive equitable care.
