The bill also clarifies that "social media company" refers to interactive computer services that provide a "social media platform," which is a website or application allowing users to create accounts and communicate with others through posts, with specific exclusions for services like email, cloud storage, and certain online shopping or career development platforms. If a social media platform fails to comply with this deletion requirement, individuals can file a civil lawsuit seeking damages, injunctions, and legal costs. This legislation, which takes effect on January 1, 2027, also notes that it does not override existing data protection obligations under the Tennessee Information Protection Act (TIPA).
