This bill amends South Dakota law to allow certain school district employees to carry concealed pistols on school property. Specifically, it modifies an existing law that prohibits carrying dangerous weapons, firearms, or air guns on school premises. The changes permit individuals employed by a school district, who are at least twenty-one years old and hold an enhanced permit to carry a concealed pistol, to carry their firearm if they have notified the local law enforcement agency of their intent to do so. This notification makes their permission valid from the date of notification until June 30th of each year. The bill also adds a new provision stating that school districts will not be held liable for damages or penalties arising from the use of a firearm by these authorized employees or by individuals who have completed a school sentinel training course or have written permission from school leadership and meet specific age and permit requirements.
