This bill amends existing law to require the Mississippi Legislature to ensure that any alternative initiative they propose to appear on the ballot alongside a citizen-initiated measure must respect the original intent and core substance of the citizen's proposal. This means if the Legislature decides to create its own version of a citizen-backed initiative, it cannot fundamentally change what the citizens were trying to achieve through their original proposal. The bill also clarifies that for any initiative or legislative alternative to be approved, it needs a majority of the votes cast on that specific measure and at least 40% of the total votes cast in the election; if multiple conflicting initiatives pass, the one with the most "yes" votes wins.
