This bill aims to make school meals more affordable for families in Hawaii by reducing the minimum revenue the Department of Education must collect from selling these meals. Currently, the department is required to recover at least one-half of the cost of preparing school meals, but this bill proposes to lower that requirement to one-quarter of the preparation cost. The legislature finds that rising living costs are a burden on working families, and making school meals less expensive will encourage more students to participate, thereby promoting equity and supporting their health and academic success, especially for Hawaii's children, referred to as "keiki."
