This bill modifies the procedures for teachers using personal leave, specifically concerning absences without a stated cause. Effective July 1, 2023, teachers are permitted to use five days of leave annually without needing to provide a specific reason, an increase from the previous four days. However, these non-consecutive days require at least 24 hours' notice to a principal or immediate supervisor, unless the absence is due to sudden and unexpected circumstances. Crucially, teachers must now arrange for a substitute teacher at least seven days in advance for any leave taken without cause. The bill also removes the previous provision that allowed supervisors to deny leave if a certain percentage of staff had already requested the same day off, and it eliminates the requirement for 14 days' notice for consecutive days off, provided the teacher arranges for classroom coverage.
