This bill increases the additional prison time, known as an "alteration of basic sentence," that is added to the original sentence for certain firearm-related crimes. Specifically, if a firearm is used in a drug transaction or during aggravated burglary or a serious violent offense, the additional sentence increases from one year to two years. If a firearm is brandished during a non-capital felony, the additional sentence doubles from three years to six years. If a firearm is discharged during a non-capital felony, the additional sentence increases from five years to ten years. For repeat offenders, the additional sentence for using, brandishing, or discharging a firearm in relation to a drug transaction, aggravated burglary, or a serious violent offense also increases from five years to ten years. The bill also clarifies the definitions of "brandished" and "in relation to a drug transaction" and makes a technical correction to a reference to "serious violent offense." These changes aim to impose harsher penalties for crimes involving firearms.
