Bill Summary

AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC SCHOOL FINANCE; REQUIRING SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND STATE-CHARTERED CHARTER SCHOOLS TO REPORT THE NUMBER OF CHARTER SCHOOL STUDENTS TRANSPORTED ON ROUTES OPERATED BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OR STATE-CHARTERED CHARTER SCHOOL AND DATA THAT MAY SHOW EXPANSION OF TRANSPORTATION SERVICES; PROVIDING THAT A SCHOOL DISTRICT OR STATE-CHARTERED CHARTER SCHOOL THAT REPORTS DATA SHOWING EXPANDED TRANSPORTATION SERVICES IN THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR SHALL RECEIVE AN ALLOCATION IN THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR FOR THAT EXPANSION; PROVIDING THAT THE ALLOCATION IS SUBJECT TO RECONCILIATION OR ADJUSTMENT IN THE SUBSEQUENT SCHOOL YEAR AS PROVIDED BY PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT RULE; MAKING CONFORMING AMENDMENTS.

AI Summary

This bill requires school districts and state-chartered charter schools to report detailed data on their school bus operations, including the number of students transported on routes they operate, the mileage of those routes, and information about the buses themselves. It also mandates reporting on students transported via public transit or other fare-based methods, and crucially, requires reporting on any expansion of transportation services, such as new routes or increased ridership compared to the previous year. Importantly, if a school district or state-chartered charter school demonstrates expanded transportation services in the current school year, they will receive an allocation of funds for that expansion in the current year, though this allocation will be subject to review and potential adjustment in the following year.
