This bill expands medical insurance premium reimbursements for surviving spouses and dependent children of members who die in the line of duty, as defined by RCW 41.05.011(5). Specifically, it mandates that their retirement allowance include reimbursement for premiums paid to the Washington state health care authority, as well as for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance). To remain eligible for these reimbursements, surviving spouses and children who are entitled to Medicare must enroll and maintain enrollment in both parts of Medicare. The bill also clarifies that reimbursements will cover premiums for employer-provided medical insurance and insurance authorized by COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985), and that these reimbursements will be retroactive to June 10, 2010, for certain provisions.
