AI Summary

This bill, known as the "Math Matters Act," aims to strengthen math education in Georgia by requiring the State Board of Education to establish content standards for advanced math courses in middle and high school, and mandating that local education agencies (LEAs), which are local school districts, offer these advanced courses. Starting in the 2027-2028 school year, students in grades four and five will receive a minimum of 60 minutes of core math instruction daily, and students in grades six through twelve who score proficient or distinguished on state math assessments will be automatically enrolled in advanced math courses, with provisions for parents to withdraw or enroll their children. LEAs must also provide instructional support and interventions for students in advanced math courses and inform students and parents about these opportunities and their connection to college and career readiness. Furthermore, the bill requires the Professional Standards Commission to update teacher certification standards to include requirements for developmentally appropriate, evidence-based math instruction, ensuring that new teachers are equipped to teach math effectively, including the "four strands of mathematical proficiency" which encompass real-world problem-solving, procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and positive attitudes towards math. The bill also mandates annual reports on student enrollment in advanced math courses and prohibits waivers of these requirements.
