AI Summary
This bill, known as the "Math Matters Act," aims to enhance math education in Georgia by requiring local school districts to implement specific math instructional time and advanced math courses for students. Starting in the 2027-2028 school year, fourth and fifth graders will receive at least 60 minutes of core math instruction daily, and districts must establish advanced math courses for grades six through ten, with automatic enrollment for students who demonstrate high proficiency on state math assessments, though parents can opt out. The bill also mandates that the State Board of Education adopt content standards for these advanced courses, and the Department of Education will provide support to districts. Furthermore, parents will be informed about advanced math opportunities, and annual reports on student enrollment and course offerings will be required, with no waivers permitted for these provisions. Additionally, the Professional Standards Commission must revise teacher certification requirements to ensure that elementary education teachers are trained in developmentally appropriate, evidence-based math instruction, including the four strands of mathematical proficiency: real-world problem-solving, procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and productive dispositions, and are equipped to provide effective interventions and use student data for instructional decisions.
