This bill expands the prohibition on carrying certain firearms in public areas, making it unlawful for any person to carry specific semi-automatic center-fire rifles, pistols, and shotguns, or any firearm modified to function as such, on public streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, parks, or any other place open to the public. Previously, this prohibition applied to a narrower range of firearms, only in specific localities, and only when loaded. The bill defines "assault firearm" broadly to include firearms with features like detachable magazines exceeding 15 rounds, folding stocks, pistol grips, grenade launchers, or threaded barrels capable of accepting suppressors or muzzle brakes, among other characteristics. Exceptions to this prohibition include law-enforcement officers, licensed security guards on duty, military personnel in official duties, members of a recognized cadet corps during sanctioned training or ceremonial events, and individuals engaged in lawful hunting or shooting activities at established ranges. A violation of this expanded prohibition is classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor, which is a serious criminal offense.
