This bill extends the early voting period for all primary and general elections in New Jersey to start 11 calendar days before the election. This includes non-presidential primary elections, presidential primary elections, and general elections. The bill also allows municipalities to extend the early voting period for May municipal elections to start 11 calendar days before the election. Currently, the early voting period for a non-presidential primary election starts on the 4th calendar day before the election. The early voting period for a presidential primary election starts on the 6th calendar day before the election. The early voting period for a general election starts on the 10th calendar day before the election. The early voting period for a May regular municipal election begins on the 4th calendar day before the election. This bill starts the early voting period on the 11th calendar day before the non-presidential primary, presidential primary, general election, and allows municipalities to adopt an ordinance to begin early voting for May municipal elections on the 11th calendar day before the regular municipal election. Under current law, the early voting period for any election ends on the second calendar day before the election. Therefore, under the bill, the early voting period would consist of ten days for these elections.
AI Summary
This bill extends the early voting period in New Jersey for primary and general elections, allowing voters to cast their ballots starting 11 calendar days before the election, rather than the current earlier start dates which vary depending on the election type. For non-presidential primaries, the period currently begins 4 days before, for presidential primaries 6 days before, and for general elections 10 days before. Additionally, municipalities that hold elections in May can choose to extend their early voting period to also begin 11 calendar days before the election, if they adopt a local ordinance. Early voting, a process allowing registered voters to cast ballots at designated locations before election day, will now have a consistent earlier start for these key elections, providing more opportunity for voters to participate.
