Bill Summary

This bill prohibits a student enrolled in a public school who is convicted of, or adjudicated delinquent for, committing aggravated sexual assault or sexual assault under N.J.S.2C:14-2 or aggravated criminal sexual contact or criminal sexual contact under N.J.S.2C:14-3, or an attempt to commit any of these offenses, from: (1) attending the same school building that is attended by the victim of the violation, and (2) utilizing the same school bus that is used by the victim for transportation to and from school. The court will order these prohibitions as part of the sentence, disposition of delinquency, probation order, or other disposition for the offense. This bill is similar to a bill recently introduced in the state of Michigan in order to ensure that a juvenile who sexually assaulted several students could be prohibited from returning to the same school building and same bus route as his victims.

AI Summary

This bill mandates that any student in a New Jersey public school who is convicted of or found delinquent for certain serious sexual offenses, including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, or criminal sexual contact, or an attempt to commit these crimes, will be prohibited from attending the same school building as their victim and from using the same school bus as their victim for transportation. These prohibitions will be ordered by the court as part of the student's sentence or disposition for the offense. This measure aims to protect victims by ensuring they do not have to share a school building or bus with their offender, similar to recent legislative efforts in other states.
