Bill Summary

Under this bill, the Civil Service Commission will permit a municipal or county police department to recruit and employ a person as a probationary entry-level police officer prior to taking the training course approved by the New Jersey Police Training Commission, and such person will also be exempt from taking the civil service examination for an entry-level police officer. The person must successfully complete a full Basic Course for Police Officers training course within nine months from the date of hire as a probationary entry-level police officer. The nine-month limit may be extended in certain cases for an additional six months. Upon successful completion of the course, the person will be promoted from a probationary entry-level police officer to an entry-level police officer. The bill permits a municipal or county police department to recruit and employ a person as a probationary entry-level police officer, upon adoption of a resolution by the governing body authorizing such hiring and the adoption of a conflict of interest and nepotism policy.

AI Summary

This bill allows municipal and county police departments in New Jersey to hire individuals as probationary entry-level police officers before they complete the required Basic Course for Police Officers training, which is a program approved by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. These new hires will also be exempt from taking the civil service examination for entry-level police officer positions. The bill mandates that these probationary officers must successfully finish the full training course within nine months of being hired, with a possibility for an additional six-month extension under certain circumstances. Upon completing the training, they will be promoted to full entry-level police officers. To implement this, a police department must first pass a resolution from its governing body authorizing this type of hiring and adopt policies to prevent conflicts of interest and nepotism.
