This bill amends New York's penal law to make intentionally damaging an authorized emergency vehicle a crime of criminal mischief in the third degree, which is a class E felony. An authorized emergency vehicle is defined in section one hundred one of the vehicle and traffic law and typically includes vehicles like police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances. Previously, criminal mischief in the third degree applied to damaging another person's motor vehicle under specific circumstances or damaging property valued over $250. This new provision adds the intentional damage to an authorized emergency vehicle as a distinct offense within this degree of criminal mischief, regardless of the monetary value of the damage. The act will take effect 90 days after becoming law.
