Bill Summary

This bill eliminates the fee imposed by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission for the issuance of a special license plate for any person who is a compensated, partially compensated, or volunteer member of any fire department in this State (firefighter) or any person who is a compensated, partially compensated, or volunteer member of any first aid or rescue squad in this State. Under current law, firefighters and members of any first aid or rescue squad in this State may apply for and receive the special license plate, which costs $15 in addition to other fees prescribed by law for the registration of the firefighter's or member's vehicle. This bill would allow firefighters and members of any first aid or rescue squad in this State to apply for and receive the special license plate for no additional cost, except for any fees prescribed by law for the registration of the firefighter's or member's vehicle. An individual is to annually renew the special plate. As part of the renewal, proof is to be submitted that demonstrates the individual remains a bona fide member of a fire fighting department or first aid or rescue squad in New Jersey.

AI Summary

This bill eliminates the $15 fee that New Jersey residents currently pay for special license plates designed for firefighters and members of first aid or rescue squads, allowing these individuals to obtain these plates at no additional cost beyond standard vehicle registration fees. The Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, which is the state agency responsible for vehicle registration and licensing, will issue these special plates, which may feature a Maltese Cross and "F.D." for firefighters, upon proof of active membership in a New Jersey fire department or first aid/rescue squad. To continue using these special plates, individuals will be required to renew them annually and provide updated proof of their continued membership, and they must return the plates to the commission if their membership status changes.
