Bill Summary

This bill would provide that the following persons would be entitled to adopt a domestic companion animal without paying a pet adoption fee from a licensed kennel, shelter, or pound: (1) an active member of the New Jersey National Guard who has completed Initial Active Duty Training; (2) an active member of any branch or department of the Armed Forces of the United States, or reserves component thereof; and (3) a veteran. The bill authorizes the owner or operator of a kennel, shelter, or pound to review and adjust the pet adoption fee to offset any cost increases associated with forgoing the pet adoption fee for eligible military personnel and veterans.

AI Summary

This bill would waive pet adoption fees for certain military personnel and veterans when adopting a domestic companion animal, which is defined as a pet kept for companionship. Specifically, active members of the New Jersey National Guard who have completed their initial training, active duty members or reservists of any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, and honorably discharged veterans would be eligible for this fee waiver from licensed kennels, shelters, or pounds. The bill also allows these organizations to adjust their adoption fees to cover any costs incurred by waiving the fee for these eligible individuals, and the Secretary of Agriculture will establish rules for verifying eligibility.
