This joint resolution designates September of each year as "Kinship Care Month" in New Jersey to acknowledge and celebrate kinship caregivers, who are relatives or close family friends providing temporary or permanent care for children when their biological parents cannot, and to highlight the achievements of children in these arrangements. Kinship care is recognized as a preferred placement for children removed from their homes because it maintains family and cultural connections, offering stability and reducing trauma. The resolution notes that New Jersey, like many other states and federal agencies, already supports kinship care, with a significant number of children in the state's foster care system living with licensed kinship foster parents, and aims to further raise awareness of the vital role these caregivers play and the support systems available to them and the children they care for.
