This bill amends the "Farmland Assessment Act of 1964" to allow forested lands and woodlands to be considered agricultural use if they are used to produce crops designated as "specialty crops" by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), such as maple syrup. Importantly, landowners who use their forested lands for these designated specialty crops will no longer be required to have a woodland management plan to qualify for farmland assessment, which is a tax valuation that typically applies to agricultural land. The bill also clarifies that the income requirements for farmland assessment will include income from these specialty crops, and it does not alter other existing eligibility criteria for farmland assessment.
