Bill Summary

This bill requires the Department of Education to establish a program for coaches of school district and nonpublic school athletic activities to obtain certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Under current law, any person who coaches a school district or nonpublic school athletic activity is required to hold a current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This bill requires the department, in consultation with the Department of Health, to offer a program for these coaches to obtain this certification. The program is to: utilize the current national evidence-based guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation; be modeled on an instructional program established by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other training program recognized by the Department of Health; include a hands-on learning component for each participating coach; and be provided at no cost to a participating coach. The bill stipulates that the costs of implementing the program are to be borne by the State.

AI Summary

This bill requires the Department of Education (DOE) to create a program for coaches of school district and nonpublic school athletic activities to get certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is a life-saving technique used in emergencies. Currently, all coaches must have CPR certification, and this bill expands on that by having the DOE, working with the Department of Health, offer a specific program. This program will follow national CPR guidelines, be similar to programs from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, include practical hands-on training, and be free for coaches. The State will cover the costs of running this program, ensuring that coaches can easily obtain the necessary CPR certification.
