Bill Summary

This bill requires each member of a board of education to maintain principal residence in the school district and spend no less than 292 days in the residence each year. Under the bill, a member of a board of education is required to maintain a principal residence in the district, or in the constituent district of a consolidated or regional district, and spend in the aggregate no less than 292 days in the residence for each calendar year that the member holds office. The bill provides that membership on the board is to immediately cease for a member who fails to maintain the principal residence. The bill permits a member to be exempt from the requirement to maintain a principal residence in the event that that the member's principal residence is damaged or destroyed by fire, flood, storm, natural disaster, or other casualty which requires the member to occupy a temporary residence. Current law requires each member of a board of education to be a resident of the district and specifies that membership on the board is to immediately cease for a member who ceases to be a bona fide resident of the district.

AI Summary

This bill requires members of a board of education to maintain their principal residence, meaning their actual and continuous home, within the school district they serve, or within a constituent district if it's a consolidated or regional district, and to spend at least 292 days there annually. Membership on the board will immediately end if this residency requirement is not met, though an exception is made if the member's home is temporarily uninhabitable due to damage from fire, flood, storm, natural disaster, or other casualty. This adds a specific daily residency requirement to the existing law, which already mandates that board members be residents of the district and that their membership ceases if they are no longer a bona fide resident.
