This joint resolution designates October 23rd of each year as Beirut Barracks Bombing Remembrance Day in New Jersey to honor the 241 American service members, including 220 Marines, 18 Navy sailors, and 3 Army soldiers, who were killed in a suicide truck bombing of their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 23, 1983. The resolution explains that this attack, carried out by the Iranian- and Syrian-sponsored paramilitary force Hezbollah, was a significant event in the rise of terrorism and the subsequent Global War on Terror. It also notes that a federal court later ruled Iran directed the attack and awarded over $10 billion in damages to the victims' families. The resolution calls for the Governor to issue an annual proclamation and for all citizens to observe this day with appropriate events and activities to remember the tragic loss of life.
