This bill expands the restricted zone around schools and religious institutions where the sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited from the current 200 feet to 1,000 feet, and this new 1,000-foot restriction will also apply to licensed child care centers, registered family day care homes, and unified child care agencies. However, there are exceptions for businesses that obtained their licenses before December 6th, 1933, and are within 200 feet of a school, and for businesses that obtained their licenses before this bill becomes law and are located more than 200 feet but less than 1,000 feet from a school, religious institution, or child care facility. The bill also clarifies that the distance is measured by how a pedestrian would walk, and it allows for waivers of this protection by governing bodies of these institutions.
