The department would be required to designate those geographic areas where lead in soils or drinking water poses the greatest danger of exposure to the public. The bill would require the department to identify public moneys that may be used to address the risks of exposure to lead and prioritize the expenditure of public moneys to remediate soils or drinking water supplies to minimize those risks. The bill would also require the department to develop a public education program to ensure the widespread dissemination of information concerning the health risks posed by lead exposure and measures that may be taken to minimize the risks.
AI Summary
This bill requires the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to create and implement a comprehensive Statewide plan within one year to reduce public exposure to lead in the environment, utilizing existing data from soil remediation, public water supply, and private well testing, along with any other relevant information. The DEP will identify areas with the highest risk of lead exposure from contaminated soils or drinking water, pinpoint available public funds to address these risks, and prioritize spending to clean up contaminated soils or drinking water supplies. Additionally, the DEP must develop a public education program to inform people about the health dangers of lead exposure and how to minimize those risks, and the plan will be made public on the DEP's website and submitted to the Legislature, with updates required at least every five years.
