Bill Summary

This bill provides an excused absence for a pupil who serves as a poll worker on an election day. Under the bill, any pupil of a public school, aged 16 or older, who is absent from school on an election day in the State, in order to complete paid service as a poll worker during an election held in the State, is to have the absence for those reasons recorded as an excused absence on the pupil's attendance record or on that of any group or class of which the pupil is a member. Any transcript, application, employment form, or any similar form on which information concerning a pupil's attendance record is requested is to show, with respect to absences, only absences other than authorized excused absences. In making a determination on whether a pupil has a perfect attendance record for the school year, a school district cannot consider as an absence an excused absence authorized pursuant to the bill. The bill further requires that a pupil is to provide any documentation that the superintendent or administrative principal of the school district deems necessary to prove the pupil meets the requirements for the excused absence under the bill's provisions.

AI Summary

This bill ensures that any public school student aged 16 or older who works as a paid poll worker on election day will have that absence from school officially recorded as excused, meaning it won't negatively impact their attendance record or their eligibility for perfect attendance awards. This provision aims to encourage civic participation by removing a potential barrier for young people who wish to serve their communities as poll workers, and students will need to provide documentation to their school's superintendent or principal to verify their service.
