Bill Summary

This bill gives the Director of the Division of Pensions and Benefits, on behalf of the boards of trustees of any State-administered pension fund or retirement system, the power to administer oaths, take affidavits and the depositions of witnesses and issue subpoenas for and compel the attendance of witnesses and the production of papers, books, accounts, payrolls, documents, records, testimony and other evidence of whatever description. In the case of noncompliance, the director may apply to compel obedience by proceedings for contempt in the Superior Court.

AI Summary

This bill grants the Director of the Division of Pensions and Benefits, when acting on behalf of the boards of trustees for any state-administered pension fund or retirement system, enhanced investigative powers. Specifically, the Director will be able to administer oaths, take sworn statements (affidavits and depositions), and issue subpoenas, which are official orders to appear or provide documents. This means the Director can compel witnesses to attend and produce various forms of evidence, such as papers, accounts, payrolls, and testimony, to aid in the administration of these pension funds. If someone fails to comply with a subpoena or refuses to testify, the Director can ask the Superior Court to force obedience through contempt proceedings, similar to how the court handles violations of its own subpoenas.
