This bill expands the ability of pediatricians and advanced practice nurses (APNs), who are registered professional nurses with advanced training, to provide behavioral and developmental health care to children. Specifically, pediatricians who are not specialists in this area can now offer care for low-acuity conditions, such as anxiety or stress, as defined by the State Board of Medical Examiners. Similarly, APNs who do not specialize in pediatric behavioral or developmental health care will be permitted to provide such care for children with low-acuity conditions, as determined by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. The bill also mandates that both the State Board of Medical Examiners and the New Jersey Board of Nursing adopt necessary rules and regulations to implement these changes, which will take effect immediately.
