This bill mandates that the Division of Travel and Tourism, in collaboration with various historical and governmental bodies, create and continuously update an interactive Internet website dedicated to New Jersey's historic sites, historic districts, and roadside markers. The website will be searchable and include an interactive map, providing details such as locations with driving and public transit directions, tour availability and hours, photographs, and contact information for each site or district. It will also link to county and municipal marker programs and will be updated whenever new sites or districts are identified or added to any state program, including those managed by the Department of Environmental Protection, the New Jersey Historic Trust, and the Department of Transportation. Furthermore, the New Jersey Historical Commission will use the website to accept public recommendations for new historical and cultural roadside markers, which will feature a standardized design with the State seal and adhere to design and placement standards established in consultation with the Department of Transportation. For the purposes of this bill, a "historic district" is defined as one or more historic sites and surrounding property that significantly impact or are impacted by the quality and character of the historic site(s), while a "historic site" is any real property, structure, natural object, or configuration of historical, archeological, cultural, scenic, or architectural significance.
