This bill, relating to Mauna Kea, allows the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority, an entity responsible for managing the lands on Mauna Kea, to extend existing leases and subleases for up to an additional ten years before certain powers and duties are fully transferred to it. These powers and duties, currently held by the board of land and natural resources (which oversees land matters under chapter 171 of Hawaii Revised Statutes) and the land use commission (which handles land use approvals under chapter 205), pertain to permits, land dispositions, and other approvals for Mauna Kea lands. The bill also specifies that this transfer of authority can happen earlier if all three entities agree, and it will take effect on July 1, 3000.
