Bill Summary

This bill requires a person who commercially sells or transfers a firearm to provide the purchaser or transferee with either a secure, lockable container that is designed to store a firearm or a trigger lock for the firearm. A seller or transferor who violates this requirement is subject to a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both. Because this bill creates a new crime or revises a penalty for an existing crime, the Joint Review Committee on Criminal Penalties may be requested to prepare a report.

AI Summary

This bill requires anyone who commercially sells or transfers a firearm to provide the buyer or transferee with either a secure, lockable container designed for firearm storage or a trigger lock, in addition to the existing requirement of a written warning about child access to firearms. A violation of these new provisions, which are now part of Wisconsin Statute 175.37, can result in a fine of up to $500, imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both, and this change may lead to a report from the Joint Review Committee on Criminal Penalties due to the creation of a new crime or revision of a penalty.
